What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of thin, fibrous crystals. Due to its durability, heat resistance, and insulating properties, it was widely used in construction materials, automotive parts, and various industrial applications. Common asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) include insulation, floor tiles, and cement products.
How Asbestos Can Harm You?
Asbestos is hazardous when its fibres are released into the air and inhaled. Prolonged exposure to these fibres can lead to serious health issues, including asbestosis (a chronic lung disease), lung cancer, and mesothelioma (a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest, or abdomen). These conditions often develop many years after exposure, making early detection and prevention crucial. Even minimal asbestos exposure can pose significant health risks, emphasising the importance of strict control and management.
Lumen Housing’s Asbestos Management Plan
Lumen Housing has implemented a comprehensive Asbestos Management Plan to ensure the safety of its residents and staff. This plan includes identifying and assessing all ACMs within its properties, regular monitoring and maintenance, and safe removal procedures when necessary. Training and awareness programmes are conducted for employees and contractors to ensure adherence to safety protocols. Additionally, Lumen Housing maintains clear communication with residents about asbestos risks and safety measures, ensuring a safe living environment for all.
